Torrox unanimous in calls for breakwaters in Ferrara
Ferrara. The beach suffers more than most from the rough weather. SUR
“Breakwaters for Ferrara, now!” That is the unanimous cry from Torrox Town Hall and local business associations who have seen another low tourism season begin without an adequate coastal defence system to stop the gradual but continual loss of sand.
This year there is the added complication in that work has started on the total remodelling scheme for the promenade, expected to cost some 1.5 million euros, and financed by the Plan Zapatero.
Given this situation all the political groups on the local council (IU, PSOE, PSA, PIU and PP) agreed at the end of last week to urge the Coasts Department to find a permanent solution to stop the loss of sand from Ferrara beach. What’s more the local authority is against the Environment Ministry’s proposal to move the sea wall back and reduce the width of the promenade on which works are currently taking place.
Instead the locals prefer the idea of building breakwaters to prevent the erosion that reduces the Ferrara beach to a thin strip year after year.
