A 92-year-old woman was arrested at Madrid's Barajas International Airport after officers found more than four kilos of cocaine attached to her body, authorities said on Monday. The arrest took place last Friday, after the woman and a much younger female companion arrived aboard a flight from Brazil.
The behaviour of the wheelchair-bound woman aroused the suspicions of police.
The elderly lady and her companion were intending to catch a plane to Tenerife but the younger woman bolted in "a crazy flight" when police began to carry out their control procedures on her.
The wheelchair-bound lady was inspected by the officers, who noticed that she had several packets attached - presumably taped - to her body, whereupon she was arrested.
Immediately afterwards, a search was launched in Terminal 4 for the woman's 44-year-old Uruguayan companion, who was ultimately caught and taken into custody.
