Construction of new homes in the province of Malaga almost grinds to a halt
The decline in the construction of new homes has become so steep that the province is getting closer and closer to a point that could be referred to as ‘zero production’, a logical consequence of an absence of buyers. The Official School of Architects has just released its latest figures regarding projects for new homes that have been authorised over the last three months.
The reduction compared to last year is an average of 56 per cent for the province of Malaga; going from 10,703 homes approved from January to September 2008 to 4,686 in the same period of this year.
In the majority of coastal resorts (excluding the city) plans for fewer than 30 new homes have been approved by the School in the last three months. In Torremolinos, for example, plans for only three homes have been put forward between July and September; in Mijas, seven; in Rincón de la Victoria, only one; and there have been no new projects approved in Nerja or Torrox since June.
Inland the situation is no better. In Antequera there have been only four new homes approved since June; in Alhaurín de la Torre, only one; and none at all in Pizarra and Álora. In total the School of Architects has given its approval to the plans for 704 new homes during the last three months.
Sales
Meanwhile this week has seen the publication of new figures regarding property sales in the province of Malaga. In August a total of 1,723 properties were sold, nine per cent fewer than in the same month of 2008, according to the National Institute of Statistics. The sale of second hand homes was down 21.5 per cent to 778, while brand new property sales actually went up by 4.76 per cent to 945.
