First Macaroni penguin born in Spain
Mother and child.
At the end of July Selwo Marina in Benalmádena celebrated the birth of a Macaroni penguin (Eudyptes chrysolophus) - the first in the country.
The new arrival has made good progress and now weighs a healthy 400 grams. These creatures become independent at two months old and can grow up to measure half a metre in height and four kilos in weight.
The baby penguin, which was born under the European Star Book (ESB) conservation and reproduction programme, will now join the rest of the marine birds at the centre’s ‘Pingüinario de Hielo’ which is kept at an icy cold three degrees.

Selwo Marina is at the Parque de la Paloma in Benalmádena and is open every day from 10 a.m. (902190482).
