Within the last few decades, litter and debris has become a popular and very important issue. The amount of trash and litter in our waters is rapidly growing and all efforts against it are nominal. All the trash, litter and debris floating on the surface of our waters isn’t something that will disappear overnight; not unless we all pull together, and by all of us, I mean everyone on the planet because within the next few centuries, the damage we’re doing to the environment, will be irreparable.
The underwater environment is a very important environment because it plays an important part in our lives. The marine environment helps provides us with the air that we breathe, it is a home to thousands of species of fish which are caught for human consumption and it is home to some of the Earth’s oldest ecosystems, which in some cultures act as the base of their ecosystem.
The seas and oceans have been here for millions of years, but now it is in danger due to; people dumping their rubbish in it, pollution via oil spills and discarded toxic waste, and the extinction of many species due to over fishing as well as global warming. The sea is like Earth’s life support system, and it is a life support system that is slowly failing to operate due to all the waste that lies beneath its surface.
Just think, the marine life that we see when we enter the water today, might not exist in a hundred years. Why is that? Because the chances are, in hundred years’ time, litter will probably kill off the aquatic race.
Now since 1986, you, the people, have been acting as a team and have begun waging war against the pollution of our seas, and because of your efforts, we have been able to win small victories, but it’s not enough, not enough of us are helping. I am not saying you have to quit your jobs and spend the rest of your life saving the seas, but if you have the time, take a moment to pick up some trash and put it where it belongs, in a bin.
