As Malaga Fair opens this year, it will be different, it will be in the midst of an economic crisis. In a region that has suffered more than any other in Spain. What impact will this situation have on the fair?
We have watched the real estate and tourism industry decline, and see no green shoots of recovery. I hope this does not spell distaster for the fair. Even though the number of tourists has not dropped significantly, the average spending of those tourists has. I am confident the fair will attract many visitors. However, like tourism, will this be the same people spending less?
Promisingly, reservations for bull fights are as generally good. Although this is a good indication, we shall have to wait and see what the actual turn-out is, and more importantly the spending.
Malaga city council has suspended protocol expenses, by doing without receptions and calling off the firework display on the last night. These actions will reduce official spending by 30 per cent. While the saving is welcomed, I hope this is not an example that the visitors will follow. What would such a decrease in spending mean for the fair?
Even considering a reduction in expenses, Malaga fair will by no means be a small town fair. The opening night promises to be as extravagent as ever and I was pleased when I saw the programme.
The fair will attract many tourists and as always Malaga will welcome them with open arms. All we hope for is a peaceful and an enjoyable fair. To everyone attending; have fun!
