"No pets here"
PETS SUBSTITUTE. watching wildlife - an alternative enjoyment
I have spoken with many people who do not have pets and wish that they did. Often the reason is that circumstances have changed and they now live in a flat or other accommodation where pets are not permitted or are just unsuitable. Older people often choose to “downsize” do not have a garden or simply do not have the room for pets. Sometimes the regulations state “No pets allowed.”
Yet many people who have had pets all their lives miss the company. At some time all owners have exclaimed “Why did we take on these animals!” Yes, they are occasionally exasperating, but would we really want to be without them?
A few days ago I was talking to our cats, one was in big trouble as he had knocked over a much prized champagne glass, almost the only survivor of four glasses brought back from one of our travels. But what would life be like if we didn’t have these six affectionate animals? Surely we would be lonely without them.
As I contemplated the possibility I looked out of the window. Right there in our garden was the largest hare I have ever seen. It was so beautiful and I watched entranced as it washed behind its ears and sniffed around the garden. I was joined by one of our cats who sat in the window watching the wonderful creature.
There, of course, is the answer. We can all enjoy wildlife, even in urban areas.
If you cannot have a pet do consider watching wildlife. The best plan is to get a book on wildlife in Spain. Several are about and a good bookshop will advise you. It helps to have a pair of binoculars. They really allow you to get “up close” and you don’t need to spend a lot. You can encourage animals to come close to your home, the books will tell you how. Just one more thing is needed, plenty of patience. Wildlife does not come to order.
