American Independence in Macharaviaya
ATMOSPHERE. Authorities and guests with some of the participants in period costume.
The village of Machaviaya welcomed hundreds of visitors last Saturday night for 4th July American Independence celebrations with a historical theme.
The opening speech was given by the head of Culture at the Junta de Andalucía, Rosa Torres, who highlighted the career of local man Bernardo de Gálvez and his important contribution to American independence.
The numerous authorities and other guests, including members of the Malaga chapter of the American Club, watched as Spanish and American flags were raised and members of the Torijos 1831 association in period costume portrayed the entry of the French into Macharaviaya in 1808.
After the official part of the evening a documentary film was shown about the Gálvez family and guests enjoyed ‘hidromiel’, a traditional drink from the period made from the fermentation of honey which was drunk by Spanish troops in New Spain.
