A Malaga-based company, Vital Icecream, recently launched a range of ice cream exclusively for pets, simply called Pets Icecream. There are three flavours to choose from: cream, vanilla and ham, but the company hopes to bring out a wider range over time. The good news is that the products are healthy as they are lactose-free, low in fat and do not contain added sugars. Also to be launched by the company in the near future are birthday cakes for pets and vitamin-enriched, low fat ice cream for athletes.
The products are sold in half litre tubs and priced at five euros. At present they are on sale in veterinary surgeries in Malaga, Seville, Granada and Cordoba, but the company plans to expand to the rest of the country by the end of the year.
Miguel López, the technical director at Vital Icecream, says that the ice creams are a healthy, tasty alternative for pets. “We consulted vets who told us that giving animals normal ice cream was not advisable, and so we decided to invent a product especially for pets,” López said at the recent launch.
The company was given a grant of 35,000 euros by the Junta de Andalucía’s Innovation, Science and Business department to facilitate the research and development of the product.
While the ice creams have been designed with cats and dogs in mind, the company says that they are suitable for all animals as they are practically lactose-free, which is very important considering that adult animals are 200 times more intolerant to this substance than humans.
