Pedro España, an expert on respiratory diseases, agrees with his colleagues around the world, that except in rare cases, there is no need for worry.
The symptoms of swine flu are similar to the normal version, headaches, fever, aching muscles, a cough, breathing problems and in some cases, vomiting and diarrhoea. And, as with the usual version, some people will feel worse than others. By the the third day, if the symptoms are not improving, you should consult your doctor. They can decide if you are in one of the higher risk groups, such as asthmatics, young children or the elderly, and provide treatment or if necessary send you to hospital for further tests. However, a course of antibiotics and rest is usually enough to put you back on your feet.
If you do suffer with respiratory problems, Pedro España advises not travelling to countries with high infection rates, just as a precaution. As for the autumn and winter, when flu viruses are more active, no one knows. “We simply do not know how the virus might evolve, we can be prepared, but we will just have to wait and see, there is a possibility it could mutate.” said Pedro España.
