In a match that lasted one hour and twenty minutes Rafa Nadal couldn't pull it back against Roger Federer's high percentage of powerful first serves that made it in. Nadal was unable to read Federer's strategy nor take advantage of break points.
Nadal who was chasing his sixth title of the year, had notched up 33 consecutive victories on clay and had not lost on this type of court since his encounter with Juan Carlos Ferrero in Rome last year. Although he conceded that Federer played better than him, the number one player in the world attributed his loss to the long semi final match the day before when it took him four hours to beat Novak Djokovic after being match point down three times. The odds were on Nadal to beat Djokovic, as he has won thirteen games and lost only four to the Serbian player but it was a long haul for him to get there.
In the women's final Russian Dinara Safina won against Danish Caroline Wozniacki 6-2, 6-4. The world number one player followed in the footsteps of her brother Marat who won the men's tournament in 2004.
