On Thursday the European Parliament voted in favour of the report which calls for Spain’s European funds to be frozen if the country does not solve its problem of real estate abuse. The report, written by Danish Green Party MEP Margrete Auken, received 349 votes in favour, 110 against and 114 abstentions. It was opposed by the MEPs from the Spanish PSOE and PP parties who were unable to convince their European fellow party members to vote against.
This is the third time that the European Parliament has endorsed criticism of urban development abuse in Spain, the previous occasions being in December 2005 and June 2007.
The Auken report is critical of all the Spanish administrations on a central, regional and local level who “are responsible for an unsustainable development model, which has had grave environmental, as well as social and financial, consequences”. The MEPs were especially concerned about the situation in Marbella.
