Demolition starts on first illegal property in Marbella
COMING DOWN. Work started on Thursday. / J-LANZA
It was a discreet but significant start. On Thursday one machine began gradually pulling down the block of 34 properties built without a licence and on land classed as ‘green zone’ in the Golf Río Real area of Las Chapas. The developers behind this illegal construction are Naviro Inmobiliaria, owned by Granada businessman José Ávila Rojas who faces charges in the Malaya corruption case.
Seven months have passed since the Mayor of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz, signed the demolition order for this and another development, as agreed with the Junta de Andalucía, in order to bring forward some of the changes laid down in the new urban development plan (PGOU) which is still waiting for its final approval and will probably not come into force before the end of the year.
The deal was simple: the Town Hall was allowed to start awarding planning permission according to the new guidelines, but in exchange it had to bring forward the demolition of illegal unoccupied properties.
The Junta produced a list of eight candidates for demolition, but the Town Hall reduced this to two after it included an extra requirement: they would only pull down buildings without a licence, not even an illegal licence awarded by the GIL local government.
