A glance at the list shows that a handful of municipal company directors earn some 108,000 euros a year, which is around 20,000 euros more than the Mayor of Malaga himself earns.
Malaga Mayor Francisco De La Torre has defended the structure of the municipal companies and says that while seventy people are employed in Malaga, Seville City Hall has a staff of 98.
The figures published online do not include the productivity bonuses paid to municipal workers. These bonuses are paid to the directors of the Malaga transport company EMT, cleansing company Limasa, Sociedad de Aparcamientos y Servicios (SMASSA), Promálaga and the congress centre. Nevertheless, in keeping with the council's promise to cut back on spending, De la Torre says that bonuses paid to these directors this year will be more modest. "We will have to see evidence of productivity before bonuses are paid," says the Mayor.
The directors of Limasa, SMASSA, EMT and the congress centre also have a special clause in their contract which safeguards their position against changes in government. In the event of dismissal, these directors are also entitled to several months' pay which is a lot more than the amount stipulated by law - seven days' pay for every year's service.
