Yesterday the judge in Vélez-Málaga presiding over the Alcuacín planning corruption case, Irene Urbón, sent the Mayor of the town, José Manuel Martín Alba (PSOE) and the director of the architecture department at the Malaga Provincial Government, José Mora straight to prison without bail. Both were charged with bribery, document forgery and planning crimes. The judge also charged the Mayor of Alcaucín with money laundering and breach of legal duty.
The Alcaucín Mayor, José Manuel Martín Alba (PSOE), arrested for alleged planning corruption, was taken yesterday afternoon to the courts in Vélez-Málaga where he was met with applause and cheers from his supporters. Martín Alba was the last of the 13 people taken in on Friday as part of what is know called 'Operación Arcos' to appear before the judge and her decision to send him to prision was reached after a long two days of listening to most of those who had been arrested.
Yesterday the judge set bail at 120,000 euros for each of the three businessmen who appeared before her on Monday and they have 10 days to pay it. Bail of 30,000 euros was set for the son-in-law of the Alcaucín constructor who was also allowed to go provisionally on Monday, and the tax adviser, who appeared yesterday morning, was allowed to go on the condition that he appears in court when required.
The deputy director of Architecture at the Malaga Provincial Government later told the judge his side of the story and then it was the turn of the ex-municipal quantity surveyor, who has been charged with planning crimes, and the Mayor, José Manuel Martín Alba.
On Monday night the judge let go on bail the three businessmen arrested after taking their statements for more than four hours.
The first of the three to appear before the judge was the owner of the Alcaucín construction company, along with his daughter and his son-in-law, just before 11 a.m. This constructor is accused of bribery, money trafficking, money laundering and crimes against the land law. The businessman and his son-in-law, who is accused of the same crimes as his father-in-law, were allowed to go on Monday night while his daughter had been let out earlier in the day with the only condition that she appears in court when called.
Also let out on bail on Monday night were the businessman arrested in Huelva and the Vélez constructor, who both appeared before the judge in the afternoon. The first is accused of bribery and money trafficking and laundering and the second is accused of crimes against the land law as well as bribery and money laundering.
In the afternoon the younger daughter of Alcaucín Mayor, José Manuel Martín Alba, was also allowed to go. The woman who wouldn't previously give a statement to the Civil Guards will now have to appear before the judge if called. The Mayor's elder daughter was allowed to go on Sunday after telling Civil Guards her version of the story.
