During the early hours of Friday morning Civil Guards discovered several bags containing a total of 160,000 euros under a mattress in the Mayor of Alcaucín's house. José Manuel Martín Alba (PSOE), who has been arrested for his alleged involvement in planning corruption, has claimed that the money was his "life savings."

Two of the Mayor's daughters and ten other people were also arrested as part of the Civil Guard operation, named 'operación Arcos', and the total amount of money seized in cash was 250,000 euros.

Civil Guards had been on the trail of the Martín Alba for months after first becoming suspicious when they realised that he hardly touched his monthly salary that was paid into the bank.

Also arrested on Friday were the man in charge of the architecture department at the Malaga Provincial Government and his secretary. However the secretary was allowed to go on Saturday after being questioned by police officers.
