Professionals from the tourism industry are not happy with the decision to use river and reservoir sediment to build up the Costa del Sol’s beaches this year. Associations of hoteliers and restaurant owners, such as Aehcos and Aehma, whose members gathered at last week’s Expoplaya fair in Torremolinos, agree that using sand from river beds was “a waste of money”.

Firstly, they claim, the work is repeated year after year without the desired effect; and secondly because the dirty appearance the river “sand” gives to the beaches affects their quality for tourists.
The professionals call for a more permanent solution to stop the erosion such as the creation of submerged or semi-submerged breakwaters.
