The Nerja Caves and Maro, joined up again by a 65 metre footbridge
LINK. Two communities had been cut off from each other. / E.C.
Taking advantage of the early hours of Wednesday morning when there was not much traffic about, workmen from the Spanish Roads department hoisted a 65 metre metallic structure into place over the A7 near Nerja, linking two areas which had been cut off from each other by the road: Maro, and the Nerja Caves. The two communities, however, still have to wait until June for the inauguration of the footbridge, which will take place when final touches such as lighting have been added.
The three metre wide stainless steel bridge has been eagerly awaited by local residents and in particular by the manager of the Caves Foundation, Ángel Ramírez, who sees it as an icon for the Nerja of the future. He told SUR that he also sees it as “a symbol of prosperity, and a new image”, and added “The design is truly spectacular”.
