Last year officers from Seprona, the Guardia Civil’s environment unit, took action against more than 100 people in the province of Malaga for hunting without the appropriate permits or poaching outside the specified hunting grounds or out of season.
The Seprona officers have warned that poaching is among the most dangerous of the offences they have to deal with as the hunters tend to act at night with poor visibility for shooting.
In the majority of cases the officers are warned of the presence of poachers by the wardens of the land in question who prefer to call the Guardia Civil rather than confront the intruders themselves.
Seprona officers also issued a significant number of fines to hunters who were in authorised areas but were unable to produce a valid licence.
Seprona has recently noticed an increase in hunting for live song birds, such as goldfinches or linnets, during the close season. This is due to a growing black market for this type of bird, with buyers even coming to Malaga from other provinces. Seprona encourages the general public to report any hunting activity outside the official season.
