Switching off your electrical appliances at night instead of leaving them on standby amounts to a significant saving at the end of the year and provides some relief for the weary planet. In fact experts say that this simple gesture can reduce a household’s electricity bill by 100 euros a year.
This is just one of the simple green tips found in the Guía Práctica del Medio Ambiente, a practical guide to the environment published by Fuengirola Town Hall.
The leaflet is divided into sections on saving energy or water and the disposal of household waste. The local authority stresses that all the tips given are simple and at the same time extremely beneficial for the planet.
As well as giving advice about the three Rs, reducing, reusing and recycling, the Town Hall encourages people to go shopping armed with fabric bags or trolleys or at least used plastic carriers bags.
In an attempt to instill in residents the need to dispose properly of their household waste, the guide goes on to explain what happens to this refuse when it is collected in the streets and how materials are recycled. There is also general information about the greenhouse effect and even the times and days that the Ecomóvil - a vehicle that collects waste that cannot be disposed of in the normal containers, from paint to furniture - will be touring the town.
The leaflet is in Spanish but the authority has tried to make the information as simple as possible. Copies are available from municipal buildings, the Environment Department and the Casa de la Cultura.
Along with classic tips such as have a shower instead of a bath or using rechargeable batteries instead of normal ones, the booklet also suggests that people make their own notebooks to recycle paper or even make their own soap using used oil. Easy to follow instructions are provided.
“Our aim is to create a practical booklet for people to keep at home and consult whenever they need to”, said María Jesús Pascual, the councillor responsible for environmental issues.
