WOW FACTOR. Winner Geneva Lane is awarded with a bouquet of flowers by producer Steve Shapple and Maurice Boland.
Maurice Boland is the director of REM radio and is also known along the coast for his charity work, particularly his fundraising projects for Cudeca. He oversaw last year’s WOW Factor talent contest and REM Telethon which grossed over 90,000 euros.
What does your job entail?
I suppose I wear many hats throughout my working day, so let’s start at the main job, that as radio director/programmer/broadcaster/copywriter. As the boss of a radio station you have to be father, mother, teacher and motivator. All broadcasters including myself suffer from the same thing: ego and insecurity, and when these two things clash, wow!, tears and tantrums. Now my next hat is as a broadcaster. I host four shows per week, all talk shows. Next hat: charity. I pledged when I set up REM that we would dedicate as much time as needed in helping various charities, and to date we have raised over 700,000 euros. I am Honorary Patron of Cudeca and last year oversaw ‘BBQ for Cudeca,’ the WOW Factor and REM’s annual Telethon for Cudeca, which grossed over 90,000 euros.
What’s the best thing that has happened in your professional life?
It must be the opportunity of travelling around the world broadcasting from Las Vegas, Barbados, St Lucia, Canada, London and Dublin.
What’s the main difference between radio production in Spain and in the UK?
The main difference is that in Spain you are not so controlled. I remember when a very well known UK broadcaster joined me as a guest on my show and said that he would give his right arm to have the freedom of speech and choice of content we have here in Spain.
Who is your favourite group?
It would have to be The Beatles. Looking at today’s music, definitely Take That. I think Gary Barlow is one of the finest composers of his time.
Tell us a goal you have set yourself for this year...
In this economic climate survival would have to be top of my list. Also, to continue our expansion, with some exciting news coming up shortly. I would also like to get back on TV.
Who would you say is the most interesting person you have ever met?
I have been privileged to have met so many interesting people in my line of work it would be impossible to pick out one.
What brought you to Spain?
I bought James Hunt’s (former World Formula One champion) club, Oscars.
Tell us something you are proud of...
My family and of course REM’s magnificent charity work
Do you have any regrets?
As Frank Sinatra sang, “Regrets I have a few” etc etc. I suppose not starting my broadcasting career earlier. Although I always had an ambition to be part of this business, it wasn’t until my 40’s that I got the opportunity.
Tell us something not many people know about you...
The problem with me is I speak very openly about myself on the radio shows so, no secrets, no skeletons. OK! I sleep badly, I’m a total worrier and I’m a chocoholic. Happy ?
