Following recent heavy rains another drought period in the province of Malaga has officially come to an end. However the big hydraulic projects which were considered as urgent three years ago still haven't been started.

One of the major projects which has not yet been started is the Mijas desalination plant which would supply the Costa del Sol with 20 cubic hectometres of water a year - which is the amount used in four months in Malaga city. In this case everything depends on Mijas Town Hall acquiring private land where is has been decided that the plant will be built.

The other big project is the expansion of La Concepción reservoir in Marbella. But this has not started yet because the Junta de Andalucía are still looking at how to carry out the works and at the same time provide vital supplies, which is the role of the reservoir at the moment.

The levels of the latest rainfall mean that water usage restrictions are set to be lifted in Malaga city and, in April, also in the villages in the Axarquía.

The State Meteorological Agency has issued an 'orange' weather warning for today until 11 p.m. when it is expected that there will be heavy rain in much of the province. Additionally the 'yellow' warning will be maintained in some coastal areas due to the storms that are forecast.
