'Camino' has the starring role at the 23rd Goya Awards

Javier Fesser's Camino was the film which shone out last night at the Goyas - the Spanish version of the Academy Awards. Camino took 6 of the 7 statuettes for which it had been nominated including best director and best film, while Los Girasoles Ciegos / The Blind Sunflowers, which is based on a novel by Alberto Mendez and set in 1940s Spain, was only honoured with one after having been nominated for 15.

Benicio del Toro won the best actor award for his role in 'The Argentine'. the film about the early life of Che Guevara and this time Penelope Cruz didn't lose out to Kate Winslet. The actress from Madrid took home the best supporting actress statuette for her work in 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona'. On receiving the award she said that she'd always been a fan of Woody Allen, who directed the film in which Cruz stars with real life boyfriend Javier Bardem and Scarlett Johansonn, and thanked him for believing in her.

'Camino', in which Javier Fesser deals with Opus Dei through a girl's story of suffering from cancer, took the first prize of the night - that of best supporting actor which went to Jordi Dauder - before taking five more.
During the gala which was televised on Spanish television channel TVE, the president of the Spanish cinema academy said that there had been "difficult times for everyone" throughout the year but highlighted that the film sector had always "been in crisis" and urged those in the industry to "fight without losing faith in the future."
