Are antiques a thing of the past? Well, if you look at the current depressed market for antiques, you could be forgiven for thinking they are! Certainly times have changed and what sold well ten years ago is now selling for a lot less or not at all.
Large, run of the mill “brown furniture” is struggling to find a buyer.
Fussy, over decorated items are now considered old-fashioned by the younger “Ikea” generation who don’t want to furnish their homes with them.
So is it all bad news? Not really, because the market for top quality antiques and paintings is still buoyant and 20th century designer furniture, objects and works of art are popular because they compliment today’s modern interiors.
Now is also a good time to invest in those neglected, but well made pieces of Victorian and Edwardian furniture, because they can cost less than the new reproduction equivalent.
So the answer to the original question is NO, of course antiques aren’t a thing of the past!
