Spain's Penélope Cruz has been nominated for an Oscar in the category of Best Supporting Actress for her role in "Vicky Cristina Barcelona," the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced.
This is the second career nomination for Cruz, who was up for best actress for her performance in Spanish director Pedro Almodovar's 2006 film, "Volver" (Return), but did not win the award.
Her rivals for the supporting actress Oscar are: Viola Davis ("Doubt"), Taraji P. Henson ("The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"), Amy Adams ("Doubt") and Marisa Tomei ("The Wrestler").
Cruz, 34, widely praised for her portrayal of an emotionally unstable artist in the Woody Allen comedy, has already won awards this season from film critics' associations in New York, Boston and Los Angeles as well as from the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures.
And though she lost out to Kate Winslet ("The Reader") at the Golden Globes, Cruz is still in the running for honors from the Screen Actors Guild and the Independent Spirit Awards and is also competing for a Bafta prize, Britain's equivalent of the Oscars.
The Oscar winners will be announced Feb. 22 in a nationally televised ceremony at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre.
