A lorry driver with a passion for hard work

Fernando Moreno’s entrepreneurial spirit led to his business emporium in Marbella. His friends describe him as an untiring and humble businessman. His body was found tied and gagged yesterday lunchtime.
He was a visionary whose passion was his work. In fact, at 76 years of age and with some physical ailments, Fernando Moreno never really let go of the businesses that he had created over the years, despite being officially retired with his five children at the helm.
He started his working life as a lorry driver, after doing his military service in Zaragoza where he coincided with a young Juan Carlos, later to become King of Spain.
Known as “El Breva”, Moreno started his own transport firm and later branched out into construction with a quarry on the Ojén road, a building materials warehouse on the outskirts of San Pedro where he lived and a cement factory in the El Ángel area of Marbella, where he had grown up and where, through a macabre twist of fate, his body was found on Thursday.
Moreno came to own seven companies, some of which were real estate firms. His best known companies however were Materiales de Construcción Fernando Moreno and Hormigones San Pedro.
He was a man of few words but knew what he wanted and was faithful to his ideas. “He wasn’t a great talker but he was a hard worker, very honest, humble and quiet”, commented a San Pedro architect after he heard the news on Thursday.
One of his nephews, a historian, wrote of Fernando Moreno’s entrepreneurial spirit in his book “Historia casual de San Pedro”.
