Fernando González, Head of SUR Photography
Happy in his job.
Fernando González (41) has worked in the SUR photography department for 20 years. Since he has been in charge of the department his many tasks include choosing the SUR in English Readers' Photos winner every month. He lives in the Puerto de la Torre neighbourhood of Malaga city with his wife and two children.
Best thing that has happened in your professional life?
Being able to have two jobs which I love. As well as my job in SUR I give photography design classes at Malaga University. I became a teacher four years ago after I completed my doctoral thesis. Support from SUR and being in contact with students has helped me develop my work as photography editor.
Best thing that has happened in your personal life?
Without a doubt having my children. They’re at a great age - 11 and 7. They’re turning out to be lovely people just like their father! (Laughs) I hope their mum doesn’t see this!
Most famous person photographed?
King Juan Carlos. I’ve always been excited about taking photos of the King of Spain. One time he came to Ronda to attend a military exercise and afterwards there was a cocktail party. He came to the table where I was sitting with other journalists and suddenly he got up with his glass of wine and toasted Spain and we joined in.
Favourite photographer?
Eugene Smith, an American photojournalist. He's no longer alive but he travelled all over the world and took lots of photos which really showed the depth of people.
Best local food?
My mum’s paella. I ask her to make it at least twice a month and the rest of the family get cheesed off cause they don't want it as often as I do.
Most embarrassing moment?
On my first day at SUR I went to take photos of a book presentation at Malaga City Hall with my colleague Carlos Moret. We got there late and the room was full of people. Carlos told me to go in and take the photos but I didn't have the nerve with everyone looking at me. I was very young! The next day I went out again with Carlos, the same happened but I had to get over my embarrassment and go in and take the photos.
Most attractive local spot?
Malaga city centre. Calle Larios since it’s been done up has so many different perspectives for taking photos and there are lots of hidden treasures there.
Most fanciable person?
I've always liked Halle Berry - I think she’s really photogenic. I first noticed her when she played a Bond girl.
Favourite film?
Indiana Jones with Harrison Ford. I've seen the films about 100 times in Spanish and in English. Second choice would be the Star Wars films. So if anybody wants to know anything about any of these films and how they were made they just need to get in touch with me!
Best Spanish tradition?
I don’t want to say it, but the ‘siesta’ definitely is! But seriously traditionally in Spain it’s as simple as we have a great life here. I'm a big fan of Semana Santa. I’m a member of the Esperanza brotherhood. I used to take out the image of the virgin but my back’s a bit bad now. The first time I took out an image, Antonio Banderas was behind me. I was 16. We carried that image together for three years then I grew taller so they moved me up a bit to balance the weight and Antonio asked me: “Where are you going? I’ve got the patent for your bum!”
