Crime in Malaga city fell five per cent in 2008 but rose in other areas of the province
Police efficiency has contributed to a fall in the crime rate. / SUR
Crime in the city of Malaga fell five per cent in 2008, but rose slightly in other areas of the province, statistics show us. Apart from Malaga, Marbella is the only coastal or inland area of the province which saw a decrease in crime last year, with a 10-12 per cent drop.

The decrease in crime in the city marks a change from the rising trend over the last few years. Perhaps the best news for citizens in Malaga is that the number of house burglaries and car break-ins has undergone the biggest drop (more than 20 per cent). Despite this, the statistics show us that raids on shops and businesses have gone up.

Domestic violence cases account for a large part of the crime rate, with more than 2,500 arrests for this type of crime made in the province of Malaga in 2008. This is some 200 more arrests than in 2007.

Traffic offences also make up a large part of the crime rate, with offences such as speeding, drink driving and driving without a licence all contributing to the general increase in crime figures in the province.
