“Environmental education is vital”
VIGILANT Inspecting urbanisations is part of his job / M. J.
Gabriel Román Valle has worked for over a decade as an inspector for the Department of the Environment at the Mijas Town Hall. One of the best things about his job is that every day is spent outdoors, which he loves.
How did you come to be part of this team?
Around 12 years ago it was decided to introduce a system to improve the coverage of the environment department in Mijas. I was one of a number of colleagues who moved to this sector.
What does your work consist of?
Principally, it means I inspect areas where nature and buildings live side by side. I check that there aren’t spillages or dumping in the rivers, that rubbish is not dumped illegally in the ravines, I check the beaches and the trees alongside the roads.
Do you work in the mountains as well?
These areas are the responsibility of the Junta de Andalucía, but we will always help out if a request is made.
What happens if you find something irregular?
The usual process is to first take photgraphs so that the technical staff in the department can evaluate the problem and have a record of the situation. They can then decide on the appropriate action to take.
Have you noticed a change in attitude to environmental matters among the local people?
I think so, yes, amongst individuals and organisations. Ten years ago, nobobody new much about the politics of the environment, it was not much discussed. Now, everybody is more concerned and there is more information available.
Does it take a lot of work to maintain the interest?
Yes, from continuing to engage people's consciences to investing more in materials and equipment to ensure sustainable development.
