At a council meeting held in Estepona on Friday 19 councillors out of 21 approved a project to enable the Saudi royal family to build 1,400 luxury properties in the town. In exchange, the council will be given a 49,000 square metre plot of land on which to build 413 subsidised houses (VPO), and will receive eight million euros which will be spent on local infrastructure.

PES opposition councillor Juan Manuel Rodríguez has requested that the council include a clause in the agreement which states that in the event of the land being sold at any time, the council will receive the profits.
