Driver arrested for running over a man and fleeing and falsely reporting his vehicle stolen
The incident occurred on this industrial estate in Antequera. / A. FUENTES
A man has been arrested in Antequera for running over a 31 year old from Madrid and fleeing from the scene. He is also believed to have tampered with his car to make it look as if the vehicle had been stolen.

The incident occurred at 10 p.m. last Saturday on the industrial estate in Antequera. The victim had ended his shift at a warehouse which supplies the supermarket Día, and was walking along the street when he was run over by a black Opel Kadett. The driver fled the scene, leaving the victim on the ground with multiple injuries. He was taken to hospital in a very serious condition.

His injuries included a serious head wound, a fractured collarbone, shoulder blade and pelvis and a shattered leg. He was later moved to the intensive care unit at the Carlos Haya Hospital in Malaga and fell into a coma.

Investigation

Two hours after the hit-and-run incident, the driver of the vehicle reported his car stolen at the police station in Antequera. A little later a witness - a friend of the suspect - made a statement to the police, informing them that he had seen the vehicle in question being driven around by a stranger close to the industrial estate. Nevertheless officers were not totally convinced by the theft story and carried out an inspection of the vehicle when it was located not far from the scene of the incident. They discovered that it had been tampered with to make it look as if it had been stolen and taken on a joyride. Twenty-four hours later the driver of the car and his friend were called in to the police station for questioning, and officers noticed that one of them had cuts on his arms, which they believe was caused by the breaking of the windscreen. Both the driver of the vehicle and his friend were arrested.
