The annual income of a resident in the Guadalhorce district is some 4,120 euros less than the average for the province of Malaga as a whole. According to the Andalusian Statistics Institute (IEA), the average income per capita in the province is 16,126 euros a year, while the highest average income in the Guadalhorce district is earned in Coín, with 13,693 euros.
The average among towns and villages in the Guadalhorce Valley and Sierra de las Nieves areas is only 12,006 euros. To carry out this most recent study the IEA used statistics from income tax returns for the year 2006.
Improvements
Nevertheless the situation has improved with regard to previous years. Between 1999 and 2006 the average income of the 14 municipalities in the Guadalhorce Valley and the Sierra de las Nieves increased by 3,451 euros, or 40.3 per cent, while during the same period the average income in the province as a whole only went up by 30.4 per cent.
Within the district Coín boasts the highest declared income, followed by Cártama and Alhaurín el Grande. At the other end of the scale is Alozaina with an average annual income of 8,686 euros, only just over half the provincial average. Nevertheless Alozaina is the municipality to have experienced the greatest increase in average income between 1999 and 2006, some 56.1 per cent. Alozaina is followed in the improvement ranking by Ardales, where incomes increased by 52.2 per cent.
